Slow-cooked pumpkin purée spiced with cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, sweetened with brown sugar and a drizzle of maple. Smoother and more intensely flavored than apple butter — a fall preserve that spreads on toast, swirls into oatmeal, and fills hand pies.

Ingredients

🌱 From Your Homestead

  • sugar pumpkin or butternut squash (1 large, roasted and puréed — about 4 cups)
  • raw honey (1 tbsp, optional)

🛒 From the Store

  • brown sugar (3/4 cup)
  • maple syrup (2 tbsp)
  • cinnamon (1.5 tsp)
  • ginger (1/2 tsp)
  • nutmeg (1/4 tsp)
  • cloves (1/8 tsp)
  • apple cider (1/2 cup)
  • lemon juice (1 tbsp)
  • vanilla (1 tsp)
  • salt (1/4 tsp)
  • canning jars

How to Make It

  1. Gather your ingredients: sugar pumpkin or butternut squash (1 large, roasted and puréed — about 4 cups), raw honey (1 tbsp, optional), brown sugar (3/4 cup), maple syrup (2 tbsp), cinnamon (1.5 tsp), and the rest.
  2. Prep your homestead ingredients — wash, chop, and measure: sugar pumpkin or butternut squash (1 large, roasted and puréed — about 4 cups), raw honey (1 tbsp, optional).
  3. Simmer uncovered on the lowest heat your stove can manage and stir every 15 minutes — pumpkin butter scorches easily because of its thickness. If it starts to spit and pop, the heat is too high. It's done when it's dark, thick, and holds its shape on a spoon without running.
  4. Cook for approximately 2 hr. Adjust to taste and serve 24 portions.
  5. Plate, enjoy, and share with your household!
