Dehydrated Apple Rings
Thin apple slices dried into chewy, sweet rings that keep for months in an airtight container. The simplest dehydrating project and the most popular — kids eat them faster than you can make them. A low-oven method means no special equipment needed.
Ingredients
🌱 From Your Homestead
- apples (6 medium, any firm variety — Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith)
🛒 From the Store
- lemon juice (2 tbsp, to prevent browning)
- cinnamon (1 tsp, optional)
- salt (pinch)
How to Make It
- Gather your ingredients: apples (6 medium, any firm variety — Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith), lemon juice (2 tbsp, to prevent browning), cinnamon (1 tsp, optional), salt (pinch).
- Prep your homestead ingredients — wash, chop, and measure: apples (6 medium, any firm variety — Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith).
- Slice 1/4 inch thick — use a mandoline if you have one. Thinner slices make crispy chips; thicker slices stay chewy. Soak in lemon water for 5 minutes to prevent browning, then lay flat on wire racks in a 170°F oven with the door cracked open. They're done when they feel dry and leathery but still bend without snapping.
- Cook for approximately 15 min + 6–8 hr dry. Adjust to taste and serve 16 portions.
- Plate, enjoy, and share with your household!
